My cousin, Benjamin, turned the big 2-0 on Saturday. Though not quite of legal drinking age, Ben has finally stepped into an exciting new age bracket… the twenties. Happy Birthday!!

We had dinner at the lovely Golden Bull Café in Gaithersburg, MD. This establishment has been around for a quarter of a century, and is known as a destination for special occasions. Continental cuisine is served, along with an extensive full-service salad bar offering more than 75 items.

While waiting for the all the dinner guests to arrive, we started off with some drinks and appetizers. I really enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms, which were tasty and full of crab meat. We also had a crab meat starter, which consisted of only pieces of crab meat, chilled elegantly above ice. A couple of other items we began with were the chicken strips and the shrimp cocktail appetizer, both of which were about as unique as they sound.

Once our entrées were ordered, our whole entire table literally got up at the same time and stampeded toward the salad bar. You would have thought it was our first time eating out. The salad bar was very appealing and featured items such as Ceasar salad, tossed salad, pasta salad, potato salad, various fruits and vegetables, nuts, bread and cheese. Before my main course arrived, I had already made five trips up to the salad bar.

Upon the arrival of our entrées, I believe at least two-thirds of our table was stuffed from the all you can eat bar. I know I was! Nevertheless, many of the items were still mouthwatering despite our full bellies. The menu specializes in prime rib of beef and select seafood dishes. I took a stab at the barbeque ribs and crab cake combination, and was not at all disappointed. The dark, smoky meat was tender, and pulled right off the bone. My crab cake was broiled and lightly seasoned within. Surf and Turf appeared to be pretty popular among our group. Ben’s dish, the Chesapeake Salmon, generously stuffed with crab meat, was our server’s favorite on the menu. Ben enjoyed it as well.

One thing I would avoid here is the pasta. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite compare to the tender ribs and juicy beef. It was bit on the bland and a little on the oily side.

Although we opted against dessert that evening, Golden Bull still had a sweet surprise for Ben: a super rich chocolate torte! A candle was lit, and we all sung. All in all, it was a nice pleasurable dinner with bit of elegance… And as an added bonus, for breakfast the next morning, I had leftover crab cakes with coffee! Mmmm…
