There’s a Strand of Hair in My Salad… Oh No!!

Last Saturday I went out to lunch with the girls and Greg to Cheesecake Factory in White Flint mall. I used to come here all the time when I worked at Bertucci’s across the hall. I don’t find the food to be that spectacular, but I will admit that the portions are always very generous. It was supposed to be a quick lunch… the girls had facials and manicure appointments at Roxann Day Spa upstairs, and we also had plans to head over to Tysons Corner later that afternoon.

Anyway, we were all pretty hungry when the food finally arrived. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Salad. It’s quite tasty. I thought it was a good choice because I wanted something flavorful, but I didn’t want anything heavy. Halfway through my meal, I was shocked to find a crinkly strand of hair tangled within the masses of the lettuce and crumbled blue cheese… yuck! So, my meal ended there. I did not, however, tell my waiter.

Here’s why: during my serving days, I used to come across many tables waving me down alerting me of strands of hair and what not in their dishes. Now I understand that this is totally gross, but it’s not the server's fault, and when the dish is halfway done, I feel like there’s no point in bothering a busy waiter. If I had found this strand of hair at the beginning of my meal, then I would probably be more inclined to tell the waiter. I also didn’t tell him because I didn’t want him to take it off the check. I thought that would be silly since I already ate half of it. I think that since I didn’t have very high expectations for the restaurant to begin with, I didn’t find it necessary to get into the situation. However, if I had been at a nicer, more expensive restaurant, and found a strand of hair in my entrée, then I would probably be a little fussier.

What do you think you would do?

At the time, I thought you should have said something. But after reading your explanation, and since you already had eaten half of it, I suppose you did the right thing. But, I would like to point out that telling the server does not mean it's his fault.
